Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring

Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring

Invisible hazards can originate from the release of toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, or the presence of combustible gases/vapors. As with fire detection, proactive gas detection enables countermeasures to be taken to protect personnel and property from such unseen dangers. That’s why Xtralis has extended its VESDA and ICAM aspirating smoke detection (ASD) systems to include gas detection and environmental monitoring.

Xtralis' VESDA and ICAM ASD systems can be equipped to actively detect gas leaks and continuously monitor air quality. VESDA ECO by Xtralis and ICAM ECO by Xtralis can be used to detect smoke as well as hazardous/combustible gases that pose unseen threats. These gas detection solutions require no construction or additional piping and do not involve installing electrical conduit.

A New Approach to Gas Detection

Conventional fixed-point gas detectors traditionally have been used to detect gas leaks and generate alarms to protect personnel and property. However, the effectiveness of these gas detectors is dependent on proper placement, which is highly dependent on the type of gas being detected as well as many other environmental factors including airflow, gas pressure, temperature, harshness of the environment, etc.

Achieving optimum gas detection often requires adding additional gas detectors within a given space to increase the likelihood of detecting a leak. This strategy, while effective, significantly increases the initial installation and long-term service and maintenance costs.

The VESDA ECO and ICAM ECO solutions overcome these shortcomings because they are multi-hole aspirating gas detection systems that provide cost-effective, 24/7 active air sampling for the early detection of gas leaks – even in the toughest of environments such as those found in industrial/manufacturing facilities.

The benefits of multi-hole ASD with VESDA ECO and ICAM ECO include:

  • 24/7 active air sampling with full integrity monitoring
  • Improved area coverage and protection
  • Reliable operation in harsh environments with variable airflow
  • Simplified installation, maintenance and service
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • Easy integration to FACP/PLC/HVAC/BMS
  • Lower energy consumption and costs
  • Tamper-proof, non-intrusive detection for aesthetics/architectural integrity
